Tips

As we all know the Internet is a fantastic tool when used the correct way. Unfortunately there are some scrupulous characters that could take advantage of people. Most families and aupairs are very genuinely trying to find one another on this site but we do have to regularly follow up on some profiles to ensure that they are who they say they are.

We ask you if you are unsure of a contact to let us know so we can investigate further. It is quiet natural to be nervous about having someone maybe coming a foreign country, to live in your home. but it can be very rewarding and exciting and a wonderful experience for the family. All these feelings are with the Aupair also and it is important to remember that this could be possibly their first time away from home and they will require support and assurance also.

What we have found the key to a successful union is that plenty of information is exchanged by email and late by phone. A relationship will quickly build and make life so much easier when the Au pair arrives.

Communication

Find out as much information as you can, education, experience, likes, dislikes

Honesty

Is it an au pair or a cleaner you are looking for! Be honest before an au pair joins your family to help with your kids. Send a sample roster and a list of clear expectations

Review

What we found very useful was a review after week 1. This is very important as it is an opportunity for minor issues to be resolved early on.

Here are some helpful questions that will help you make your mind up when deciding on a family or an au pair

  • Can you provide an independent reference? Former employer / Teacher / Family / etc
  • Are you asked for money in advance for travel / Visa / lawyer etc
  • Sometimes we have seen where no questions were asked about previous experience working with kids! This is a big no
  • Can you provide a letter from your local police of no criminal history
  • Does someone look for bank details / credit card numbers etc
  • Does an applicant except the role without asking questions

“ If it's too good to be true…………….then it usually is”

If there is a problem with any of the above questions you need to re evaluate your choice. If you feel uncomfortable with your selection, then you should not proceed with your choice. Never send money or accept money in advance.

If you have a number of choices we have some questions for families and aupairs to ask to help them make their decision. These questions will help ensuring the right choice is made:
